Warren Buffet-backed Chinese automotive giant, BYD, has delivered a shipment of 106 new electric buses to Finland in the largest delivery ever received by the eco-conscious Scandinavian state.
The transaction, the first between Finland and BYD, will see 64 buses introduced to the tarmac of the Finnish capital, Helsinki, which has been at the forefront of urban sustainability in Europe for many years.
Nobina, Finland’s largest Public Transport Operator (PTO), became the first firm to include BYD’s new 15m low-floor model as part of its fleet. The ‘triple landmark’ transaction will see the remainder of the 106 buses – 42 in total – used in the southern coastal town of Turku.
European countries tend to opt for short wheelbase, double axel, 12m buses or long-wheelbase 18m articulated options when transporting larger groups of people. However, Scandinavian nations have included 15m electrified options to their fleet, which BYD now supply.
BYD’s debut in Finland is fresh off the heels of its breakthrough into the German market. The Chinese auto heavyweights also delivered 22 eBuses to PTOs in the North-Rhine Westphalia, Western Germany. This landmark deal was preceded by the group shipping ten eBuses to Pecs, Hungary. BYD now has electric buses from the southern tip of the Iberian coast in Spain to the northern regions of Scandinavia, where more European markets are interested in adopting eco-friendly public transport systems.
